Design: Mystic Sea
Artist: Brent Smith
Mystic Sea, designed by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Brent Smith from Cape Mudge, features the legendary Sisiutl, a powerful supernatural sea being deeply connected to protection, transformation, and spiritual strength. Often shown as a double-headed or three-part serpent, the Sisiutl is known for its shapeshifting power and its ability to guard against harm.
In Kwakwaka'wakw tradition, the Sisiutl is a symbol of immense strength and mystery. Its image was often used on canoes, house fronts, and important entranceways as a protective force, warding off negative spirits and honouring the power of the supernatural world.
With its bold lines and layered movement, Mystic Sea brings a sense of depth, protection, and oceanic energy to any space. For those drawn to this powerful creature, its sister screen, Sea Serpent, offers related Sisiutl imagery by Brent Smith in a different size and composition.
